Oakland International Airport Implements MobileAccess For Wall-To-Wall Wi-Fi Coverage

MobileAccess Universal In-Building Wireless Network to Distribute Sprint Wi-Fi Service

Vienna, Virginia – November 2, 2005 – MobileAccess Networks, a leading provider of in-building wireless network solutions, announced today that its Universal Wireless Network has been deployed by Sprint at Oakland International Airport (OAK) to provide Wi-Fi service for passengers and airport employees. Encompassing over 500,000 square feet, the MobileAccess solution offers the Airport a Wi-Fi solution that is more secure and easier to maintain than conventional Wi-Fi deployments. In addition, the multi-use MobileAccess infrastructure provides the flexibility to support additional wireless voice and data services to address future needs.

OAK currently has over 200 flights a day and serves 14.1 million passengers annually, many of whom are business travelers who increasingly expect Wi-Fi connectivity. Conventional Wi-Fi implementations can be difficult to maintain in a busy airport because IEEE 802.11 Access Points (APs) must be mounted high on ceilings and walls. The MobileAccess Universal Wireless Network eliminates this issue by clustering the APs in secure telecom closets, while passive broadband antennas, which require no maintenance, are installed in public areas.

The MobileAccess solution is complementary with third-party Wi-Fi solutions that support the IEEE 802.11a/b/g standards, enabling it to readily integrate into any Wi-Fi environment. Most importantly, once the MobileAccess Universal Wireless Network is installed, new services and applications can be easily and cost-effectively activated on the same system without adding extra infrastructure, disrupting public spaces, or disturbing the existing wireless services and applications.

Matt Schiller, Sprint’s director of Business Development, Wi-Fi Networks, believes that the MobileAccess Universal Wireless Network offers customers like OAK both cost and competitive advantages. “The MobileAccess deployment enables OAK the ability to provide real value to the business traveler who ultimately may avoid airports that do not offer Wi-Fi,” said Mr. Schiller. “From a fiscal standpoint, MobileAccess significantly reduces ongoing operational expenses by clustering the Access Points in easily accessible wiring closets instead of on the ceiling. We also have the flexibility to re-purpose our investment by running additional wireless services and applications over the same infrastructure.”

“MobileAccess enables customers like Oakland International Airport to deploy enterprise-class Wi-Fi infrastructures that can readily adapt to accommodate unforeseen future wireless service requirements,” said Cathy Zatloukal, president and CEO of MobileAccess. “With our Universal Wireless Network’s integral multi-service support, organizations can use the MobileAccess infrastructure to simultaneously support any future mix of wireless services and applications.”
